Free Comic Book Day – May 7th 2011
May 7 is Free Comic Book Day, and some of the creators/publishers has decided to give everyone some free comics.
Norwegian Zombie series to launch digitally with Oxicomics
Norwegian comicbook artists Flu Hartberg and Geir Moen has colaborated to create a new comic aimed at youth. Flu has been doing the writing, and Geir is doing the artwork.
The pitch goes like this: “There has been an outbreak of a new highly contagious epidemicin Norway, and everyone under 18 has been vaccinated against it. We find ourselves at a high scool in the fictitious town of Rakkestad, when the virus hits everyone not vaccinated. The events unfold fast and fatall; the infected turns into bloodthirsty zombies. The first outbreaks happens in the middle of the school day, and the students must protect themselves with any imaginable means againts the zombie teachers.
The story will be published in Norwegian initially, but will soon follow in English – and is exclusively available from Oxicomics.
The story was inspired by the recent school-tour covering all of Norway where the two creators have been making comics together with students. No school, student or teachers have directly inspired the series – it is more a reflection of the collective experiences of everyone and everwhere we have been. The choice of “Rakkestad” as location for this story, is due to the similarities in location of the REAL Rakkestad – a place with a remote location with very few means of public transportation in and out. Furthermore, the surroundings and the size of the city was perfect for a thriller like this.
In Norway, Flu Hartberg is known as the creator of the humours series “Fagprat” (loosely translated as Talking Shop) – a regular feature in Dagbladet. Geir Moen has spent most his recent yers working on the action-comics “De Fire Store” about famous Norwegian authors Kjelland, Ibsen, Bjørnson og Lie as action heroes.

For the last 5 months we have been working hard on our new digital comics platform – and the fruits of the labor is getting closer and closer to being plucked.
The launch of this is somewhat of a revolution for both readers and publishers (including self-publishers). We will release the first truly HTML5 based comics reading application for iOS (iPhone, iPad, iTouch), Android, Symbian and desktop/laptop computers (Windows, Linux, OS/X) – no Flash – only open, standard web technologies – while still creating an immersive reading experience that readers have grown accustomed to.
Publishers, on the other hand, will be able to use the self-service platform to publish comics in ways that no other digital comics platform offers. Choose between “Complete” issues and “Ongoing” issues, and offer the purchased comics for true ownership (free from DRM) – not just for rent like all other digital comics applications out there today.
Since the new application is 100% HTML, there are no AppStore approval processes (or censorship) – all comics can be distributed as they were intended by the creator – without having to conform to antiquated moral codes. The Oxicomics eco-system is a curated environment with primary focus on quality – not just what might sell the most. Blatant bigotry and pornography will not be admitted, but remember – we are scandinavian so we are much more liberal than ….lets just say others….

20.000 Oxicomics powered comics has been downloaded
We have reached the round sum of 20.000 downloads between the different comics distributed by Oxicomics through the AppStore.
We are working hard to make sure there are more comics on the way, and an exciting new comics application to be enjoyed sometime in February/March.

New graphic novel released
We are happy to announce that we have released Asem – a graphic novel – a (mostly) language independant graphic novel. It’s a 140 page book with a compelling story about the consequences stemming from the lack of communication. It covers the difficult topic of racism and should be read by one and all.
The story is aimed at a mature audience, but don’t let the rating (17+) fool you – due to Apple’s somewhat restrictive policy about partial nudity we had to rate the book with “Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity” when in fact there are 5 panels that contain partial nudity. The book was first not approved by Apple, stating “…it contains sexually explicit images, which is not in compliance with the App Review Guidelines”. The guidelines has the following to say about this subject: “18.1 – Apps containing pornographic material, defined by Webster’s Dictionary as “explicit descriptions or displays of sexual organs or activities intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings”, will be rejected”. Thankfully, after we appealed to the App Review Board, they decided to accept the book based on an increased rating.

As I have mentioned before, keeping in touch with the readers can be done in several ways, one of them is through Reader Comments for a specific page.
